CMV PCR Kit
Background Information
Cytomegalovirus (CMV), classified as Human Herpesvirus 5 (HHV-5), is a member of the Herpesviridae family and belongs to the β-herpesvirinae subfamily. Other herpesviruses include members of Alphaherpesvirinae (such as HSV-1, HSV-2, and varicella-zoster virus) and Gammaherpesvirinae (such as Epstein–Barr virus). A hallmark of all herpesviruses is their ability to establish long-term latency in the host.
CMV can be present in many body fluids urine, saliva, breast milk, blood, tears, semen, and vaginal secretions. Urine samples are typically used for congenital CMV infection screening due to the high level of viruria in infected newborns.
Human CMV infection poses a serious risk to immunocompromised individuals such as HIV-positive patients, organ transplant recipients, and newborns. It is more prevalent in developing regions and lower socioeconomic populations, and in industrialized countries, it is the leading viral cause of birth defects.
